A project
Project background
Noise caused by water supply installations may lead to annoyance in adjacent rooms, for example in dwellings, hospitals and hotels, especially at night. This noise has its origin mainly in appliances.
Standardized measurements are needed to compare the noise emitted from different products.
The appliance to be tested is mounted at the end of a water pipe, the test pipe, which is fixed to the wall of a room. The wall is called the test wall, the room called the test room. The sound generated by the appliance is transmitted from the test pipe to the test wall. The airborne sound which is radiated from the test wall into the test room is measured. It is not possible to describe in detail how a given tap would give the same result in different laboratories. Therefore, the principle of comparing results to an Installation Noise Standard(INS) is utilized. This procedure can be regarded as a kind of calibration of the test arrangement.

Measurement Procedure Example
According to the ISO 3822, the main measurement procedure is as follows. It is only one operator that he can perform the appliance noise measurement while controlling the whole water supply installations alone. With the adoption of data acqusition hardware for water pressure and water rate, customer can enhance the measurement efficiency greatly.
Measure the noise in the test room due to the noise produced by the Installation Noise Standard (INS) -> Result Lsn
Measure the noise in the test room due to the noise produced by the appliance under the specified test conditions -> Result Ln.
Measure water pressure and water flow rate for monitoring and documentation.
The program calculates the Appliance sound pressure level Lapn as
Lapn = Ln – (Lsn-Lsrn)
Lsrn: Reference value of the INS
Lap (SumA)
Typical Test Sequence
The procedure regulates measurements of the application according to the following conditions:
Operating conditions (one sample):
0.3 MPa – Fully Open – Cold 0.5 MPa – Fully Open – Cold
0.3 MPa – Fully Open – Warm 0.5 MPa – Fully Open – Warm
0.3 MPa – Fully Open – Mix 0.5 MPa – Fully Open – Mix
0.3 MPa – Loudest Position – Cold 0.5 MPa – Loudest Position – Cold
0.3 MPa – Loudest Position – Warm 0.5 MPa – Loudest Position – Warm
0.3 MPa – Loudest Position – Mix 0.5 MPa – Loudest Position – Mix
- 1/1 or 1/3 octave analysis (100Hz – 5KHz)
- INS measurements
- 3 measurements pr. test condition
- 3 samples pr. model
- Results in an averaged Sound Pressure Level: Lap
